A full kapok fill for side sleepers

A side sleeper who likes a high pillow needs a full kapok fill, packed generously and fluffed back to full height every day or two.

Updated .

In short: A side sleeper needs a generous, high kapok fill in a tightly woven cotton cover, fluffed back to full height every day or two.

The fill and its upkeep

Fill quantity60 x 70 cm, filled with 100% kapok, at a fill weight of 1000 grams. The seller lists this fill as suited to side and back sleepers of medium to large buildRetailer listing, downpillow.com
Loft7 to 11 cm at the centre of the pillow before any weight goes on it. A systematic review found that a pillow height between 7 and 11 centimeters was shown to yield the highest comfort ratingsSystematic review, ScienceDirect
Fluffing rhythmFluff your kapok pillow daily by hand. To restore volume, put it in the sun for a few hours, or in winter tumble in a warm dryerMaker care page, kapok.com.au
CoverTightly woven cotton. Most kapok pillow manufacturers pair it with a tightly woven organic cotton shell to keep the fiber from working its way through the seamsKapok pillow guide, sierradreams.com
Compared with downThe same retailer lists a down-and-feather pillow at the same size, with 1000 grams of filling, recommended for side sleepers up to 80KG. A side-sleeping kapok fill weighs about the same as its down equivalentRetailer listing, downpillow.com

How your answers point to this kapok fill

Side sleeping leaves the widest gap of any position, from the ear down to the edge of the shoulder. Kapok has to fill that gap while the head presses down on it. A recent study of kapok insulation boards notes that the fibres form hollow tubes which contain as much as 80% air. That is why a kapok pillow weighs little and gives way more than its size suggests. So the fill has to start generous. A pillow that looks full on the bed can sink a long way once a head rests on it.

Liking a pillow that sits high points the same way. The 1,000 g figure in the table comes from a pillow its seller lists as firm, which is the end of the range a high-pillow sleeper wants.

The care is the trade. Kapok settles overnight, and a full fill only stays full if it is shaken out. One maker advises a daily fluff and says that patting it round before you go to bed is enough. If you said you would fluff it now and then, a full fill still works. Expect some lumps between fluffs. The guide on why kapok clumps and how to fluff it back covers the two-minute fix.

When the kapok answer would move

Your body size moves the number more than anything else. In a study of side sleepers, the individual pillow heights that kept the neck closest to its standing curve ran from 9.74 to 11.76 cm, about four to four and a half inches (Med Biol Eng Comput). Broad shoulders call for more fill. That is the main lever. A narrow frame calls for less, removed with the zip barely open and the pillow held over a large bag, so the loose fibre does not float into the room.

A reaction to down or feathers does not change the specification. Kapok is a plant fibre, so it carries no feather proteins, and Can you be allergic to a kapok pillow? sets out what it can carry. With a dust reaction, the upkeep matters as much as the fill. One seller's advice is blunt: wet fiber clumps and stays clumped. Wash the shell, sun the fill. The guide on washing a kapok pillow explains what water does to the fibre. For the full comparison with down, see how kapok and down behave differently.

Testing it at home with the pillow you have

Fluff the pillow, lie on your side, and ask someone to look at you from the foot of the bed. Your head and spine should form one straight line, with no tilt toward the mattress or the ceiling. If your head drops, add kapok until the centre sits back within the height range in the table. If it tips up, open the zip only slightly and lift a little fill out over a large bag. Check again after a week, because one maker notes the fibre will settle a little over time and tells owners to add kapok through the zip as needed. Last, hold the cover up to a lamp. The same maker describes its shells as so tightly woven that you can't see any light when you look through one layer. If light shows through yours, loosely woven fabric allows the fine kapok fiber to work through the seams over time.
